[Rdm]Hospitals, diseases, infections and hot nurses
So I just got out of hospital today. I had a instant pneumothorax or in human language, a collapsed lung because of a 'bulla', which is some bad tissue inside the lung. It was the third time now I was operated and every time they promise it won't and physically can't happen again. I had to stay for one week and had to go through some hellish pain as they tried to wire my spinal chord with some painkilling machine, I went into shock and it was the most painful moment in my life... until then. They put me asleep and 2 hours later I woke up... to early. I just got out of the operating room and I hadn't received any painkillers. I screamed the whole hospital together as I had three holes in my body which had just been filled up with some kind of "lung-glue". (I also had a tube shoved down my penis ) I'm now partially recovered.
It's always cool to brag about broken body parts, diseases and infections.
So here comes:
- Nose: Broken twice and 'pulled' in it's correct position without anesthesia... I fainted twice.
- Fingers: Broken twice right pinky, once middle and ring finger.
- Foot: A wart, the size of a puck which has been laser removed.
And that's about it. A nice topic to talk and get to know each other.
So what's your story?

Re: [Rdm]Hospitals, diseases, infections and hot nurses
Wow the hospital seems to love you
For my part, I only broke one thing in my life and I guess it was my only visit to the hospital. I broke my arm when I was 14. I was on my bike, trying to go as fast as I could and then when I was at 30 km/h I had the wonderful idea to brake the wheel before me instead of behind to try to raise the wheel behind me like the pros did. But of course I flew into the air, smashed on the ground and got my bike on my face, nice story but painful one ^^
I also broke two teeth with a bowling ball but I'll tell that story another time :p

Re: [Rdm]Hospitals, diseases, infections and hot nurses
I haven't broken anything (yet) but I've been in hospital 4 times (apart from check ups):
- At 9 I sprained my wrist very badly and went in to check if it was broken.
- 2 years ago (at 13) I had my appendix out.
- That summer I crached on my bike and landed on my scar and it became all swollen and went brigh blue.
- Last year (14) I tore all the ligiments in my right anckle after jumping over a wall and landing badly.
- And alough I didn't go to hospital for it, a few years back I sliced my forehead open on a trampoline and lost masses of blood.

Saltoing like a pro and ending up upside down on the springs of the trampoline? That would 've been awesome .Medrolke wrote:

Don't tell the story. My evil mind fills in the blanks leading to hilarious results .Orango wrote:

the only time i was in hospital was when i was a baby, because i am an twin so they watch u more closely.
for he rest i only went a few times to the home doctor to get anti hepatitis a protection (for traveling).
allthough the last 2 years i have been in the hospital on allmost daily base, but this is because i am studying medicine and therefore learn there.

Re: [Rdm]Hospitals, diseases, infections and hot nurses
I broke my wrist when I was 11, nothing bad but they still had to put me to sleep for 15-20 minutes to fix me up. I had to wait around 4-5 hours before they actually got to help me.
At 12, I as run over by a car, nothing bad again, I just had a sprained leg. I remember laying in the ambulance. A nurse was looking at me and told me "We're going to check if that's broken". I replied "Nah, don't worry, it's not, I'm ok". She looked at me and said "well my, if every patient had that kind of optimism...^^"
I had to go to the hospital a few more times, mostly for check ups and stuff, I was for example diagnosed for hyperthyorid and had to run a fe minor tests (mostly blood tests). I remember one of these tests. I had to give a blood sample, not such a big one and wait for an hour. I had then to give another blood sample and get an injection. After half an hour, I had to give another blood sample and a 4th one one hour later. Every single time, the damn nurse would look for the same vein. One painfull moment was when she as trying to find the vein inside my arm with the damn needle...Ouch

I'm back in the hospital since sunday. My lung collapsed again. I want to go outside and have a beer for god sake!

Man, you gotta lay off smoking while deep sea diving!
I hope they get it right this time. If not, just kick their asses. (From your list of injuries you seem no stranger to fisticuffs)
I've only broken my nose (free beer, concrete stairs). It was mostly just maceration of the skin but after a couple of days I went to the hospital just to be sure. This was about seven years ago when I was 28 and still lived in America and I was uninsured so I waited around for six hours and at the end of it they gave me a band-aid and a bill for $1100.
That, European residents, is the famous "Price of Freedom" you often hear us talking about.

Hopefully, the new system which was introduced by Obama will avoid people paying such absurd amounts of money !

I'm not holding my breath. Because, you know, why risk it?
If it's not single-payer it's not what we need.

America: the land of the free...
And I was gonna say move to the UK... but the NHS kinda sucks
Re: [Rdm]Hospitals, diseases, infections and hot nurses
I've lived in the UK before and hope to again by the end of the year. The waits are terrible but the price is unbeatable.
I live in Ireland now and their health system is...let's just say I've been very careful. One hospital recently discovered a room with 50,000 unread x-rays...

Re: [Rdm]Hospitals, diseases, infections and hot nurses
The waits aren't the only problems. There's also the fact that it is MASSIVLY under-funded.
Two facts for you:
1. Dispute funding the NHS (i.e. giving out free healthcare to all UK residents), the British government acually spends LESS on healthcare than the US government.
2. Because of this, if you are going blind from a cureable desease, the NHS will only cure you in ONE eye and if you are only going blind in one eye in the first place, they will refuse to give you treatment at all.

Re: [Rdm]Hospitals, diseases, infections and hot nurses
i can say in the netherlands i am pretty happy with our situation.
i could be a bit biassed since i am studying to work in this sector but ok.
here u can just go to ur homedoctor and he can send u in to the hospital, u could also go to the first aid and then get redirected to a specialist doctor.
i dont see the point why u should pay for treatments only if u insist on getting an more expensive drug then u need to pay it urself.
yea we here have some waiting lists but if the doctor thinks its urgent then u will get in front of the line.
and with the growing technical improvements people just want more procedures taken before they accept there decease so those people are good to place on the waiting list.
