Bringing civilization to the barbarian masses

Good morning, barbarians.

It has come to my attention that you lack any form of civilized culture, not perhaps so surprising considering what primitive heathens you are.

In order to improve the situation and make society just for all those civilized men and women who are so unfortunately forced to pass through this land of horror, I have taken the task unto myself to bring civilization to your land.

In order to do so I have taken my time to find ten pieces of art and ten pieces of music which will be displayed further down in this post.
Your task will be to make a couple consisting of one piece of art, and one piece of music, and explain to us all why this is your favoured match, and motivate why you think it is the best match through words. In other words, you will have to explain why they fit together, what they have in common, what you think about when you see and hear them etc.
After which, just for the laugh of it, I suggest we can constructively give each other criticism regarding our matches in order to encourage civilized conversation. This can be done through rating the previous poster's match on a scale 1-10, whilst motivating why.

I will make the first post as an example.

I have decided to match together art piece #1 and musical piece #6

From both the picture and the song you get a feeling of a power struggle, a battle, a fight against something. There is constant turmoil and force and power comes to mind, a display of such traits, perhaps even to the extent of a duel where two sides are matched against each other and competing over it. As we can see in the picture, it variates quite a lot depending on where in the picture you look different sides will have different advantages over one another, something which you can hear in the song by Tchaikovsky with its constant turmoil and change in tone whilst sticking to the same theme continuously.

They both make me think that, judging by the way the music and the picture is portrayed, something important is at stake. You get the feeling that this was not simply just another battle or just another overture, they signified something grand, pompous and important.

I have matched image #10 with music piece #3, which on the surface seems pretty incongruent unless you know what the image is supposed to portray. The image is of the Buddhist Avalokiteśvara (also known in China as Guanyin, who happens to be one of my favorite goddesses), who is a bodhisattva associated with compassion, mercy, and unconditional love. Avalokiteśvara is said to have been so overwhelmed by the many souls in need of help that s/he developed 11 heads and 1000 arms in order to be able to reach out to more of those in distress more quickly.

In contrast, the music expresses a kind of universal despair at the conditions in the world and a wish to escape from it. Avalokiteśvara/Guanyin attempts to succor despairing souls by freeing them from the endless cycle of reincarnation. The hopelessness expressed by the poet can only be answered by the compassion of the bodhisattva.

On a side note, this is an interesting collection of images and music, and a surprising entry from you, Chewie. Whether or not we gain culture from it, it should make us think.

Excellent analysis, I believe that strong emotions can be seen in both and much like you say it has a positive side (for example love) and a negative one (such as despair caused by love etc). This type of emotion is widely seen all over the world nowadays but rarely in such a pure, meaningful and clear way. I'd rate it an overall 9,5/10 for an unexpected combination with a great analysis to go along with it.
