Protectionism Empty Protectionism

Post by manekemaan 2013-01-11, 10:32

Dear fellow eBelgians

So my first real forum post.

I was wondering, why do we tax our own people more than we do those of other countries? (VAT > Import tax)

Isn't it more logical, in a time where everything suddenly becomes bloody cheap and you can barely pay the cost of moving for fighting with the money you make, that we help our own people get their goods on the market BEFORE we help foreigners do the same?

I was wondering, what are the arguments of keeping, for an example the VAT on food 15% and the import taxes only 12%?

Why is it not better to do for an example 10% VAT and 20% Import taxes to support our belgian economy?

No ranting please, just a pure economical discussion.

There was a moment that we tried to manipulate the taxes to stabilize our income, so I think that is the main raison of the difference (import is less important).
It is an interesting question, and maybe a point to discuss again.

This topic should be placed in Congress - Vote section.
I support this proposal.
We should increase the Import Tax to 20 %.

We should increase the Import Tax to 20 %.

It should be first debated in congress at least 24h before a vote can take place.
The discussion can take place in the debate section of congress our in the monetary section of our forum. Taxes has nothing do to with politics.

Maybe that the MoF can give us his vision

Just a note, the import tax is added to the VAT. So the actual import tax is 15% +12% = 27% Wink (more or less I don't remember the exact formula^^)
