A eBelgium IRC channel for French speakers?

Post by Tensa Zangetsu san on 2013-03-28, 19:30

Since 3 days in the official channel #eBrussels, it is forbidden for French speakers to speak in French.

That's why I thought about creating a unofficial eBelgium channel for French speakers, what do you think about it? I think #eBrussels-fr is good. Just, don't forget that #eBrussels will still the official eBelgium channel, I don't want to split people.

And I want to add that it's the same thing for Flemmish speakers, but I won't create it, I don't speak it ^^

Good! So, which one do you prefer? (French speakers)
#eBrussels-fr
#eBrussels.fr
#eBruxelles

I think eBruxelles is the best Smile it's the French translation for eBrussels Smile

That's because you were trolling. Smile

Anyway it's annoying for people who don't speak french ( the majority ) if they want to talk and everyone else is talking french. They can't join the discussion either. And this is not about it being "french" but a language that not everyone can understand. Everyone understands english. ( At least I suppose so else you wouldn't be here... )

Anyway, I think french can be tolerated perfectly but if not french speaking people want to join, I think a switch to English should be made.
English is still the nr1 langauge used and it will stay this way. So don't make a habit talking french Smile

( Or replace french by dutch in the above, same thing. Smile )

Trolling? me? Oh well...

But when people speaks with difficult English words, I can't follow the discussion either. Then, don't forget that people should know how to speak English, but it's not the reality. My English is crappy and I know it. In a eBelgian channel, I should be able to talk in a official Belgium language, and French is one.

I can show you (yes, I register ALL chat logs) that you talked in Flemish (or NL) and I didn't say nothing :/ I respect that Sad

I feel really upset, don't I want to bother you (I think we know each other for now a so long time Very Happy), but it's a weird sensation for me.

I agree with this because when we have a french channel we also want a flemish channel.
And when we are splitting it maybe it is easier to get a united Belgium with the Netherlands so they can conquerer Wallonia. I know I go over the top but that is also what I think of the french channel.

in Belgium there are 2 different languages (french and NL) so if you want everyone to enjoy.

if this channel was created the flemish people speak on #ebrussel-fl, the french people on #ebrussels-fr and nobody on #ebrussels Very Happy

Elynnie, people are talking in priv. Do you know where I'm obliged to speak in French? In the official channel of the Government or personal channels. So people don't speak more in #eBrussels :p

And I think people prefer #eBruxelles, good choice people (oh well, I would say "good choice" even if you took another one ^^)

More seriously, I know that in the past there already existed french and dutch channels, so it'll be nothing new.And I agree with Pieter, the debates at country level are all made in english and if french and dutch are tolerated on the forum, it's rare that we see them on serious topics Wink

back on topic, I think French must be possible,
only when you see that there non French speakers joining, adapt and try to speak English.
sometimes I do also mix the languages, yesterday on BNA we did it also, French, English, as long as everybody knows what is said it is OK, only when you see that someone will flee cause he can not follow the conversation you adapt.

Even if I'm quite new, and from France I'd like to share my point of view. As french speaker it's true that sometimes it is hard to understand every thing said on IRC. But after all, langage is really important for a small community like ours.

But, we can also have a French chanel which won't be official. It can be use for some help to beginners or for some talks. But nothing officiel. (German speaker can do the same).

Anyway, it's really important to have one chan officiel where everybody is and speak in English.

Oh Yannis, you're back?
Why German language rules?

Coryn, I don't know, but well... I didn't see him talk many time in German in #eBrussels.

Zangtsu, may i remind you that you where not kicked out of the #ebrussels channel because you spoke French, but it was the content that got you in trouble and it was not permanent. As Pieter explained earlier in this topic.

And now you separate the french-speaking from the rest of the community.
Even if that is not your intention, it will be the result.
How and why do you come to such a decision?
Such things creates more division instead of closing that gap.

Everyone should drink enough until he speaks fluent Esperanto before joining any IRC channel. All in favour?

seems Google do not like Esperanto just like me, hated those lessons, it is not made for Germanic speakers.
well I am not really sure if I made the sentence right
wanted to say, "te gek, dienden die lessen toch nog voor iets"
only this way it does not fit," te gek" is a Duth expression, hard to put it in other language

Speaking as an English speaker who can read French and sometimes understand things written in Dutch, I think honestly that English should remain the official language of eBrussels because we are such a mixed community and - even though I can understand why people don't like it - English is the most universal language among people playing this game.

As for having to go into private channels/chats to speak in your preferred language, I really don't see why that is such a problem. I have my own private channel, and people will often break into Dutch there, although they know I don't always understand. I tolerate it because I know they will switch back to English if I say anything. I also have my best conversations in query, where there are no rules about what language you use. We are such a small community, I hate to see further divisions made over language.

Nope, just got some wifi today in Swakopmund. And "rules" is a verb, you could paraphrase it as "beats any other (language)" Wink

I know Yannis, I'm bad at English but I know what "rules" means xD
However, I don't understand MaryamQ.
BoerJan, I've never tried to learn Esperanto, maybe should I?

The truth is that if I can't feel free to speak with other French speakers in French in this channel, I can't explain precisely the things I want to say. I constantly need a translator in a opened in a window.
Then, when I need to talk to Jofroi, BrunoCND, Yannis... I do it in private. The only thing I do is I gather these people in order to have all-in-one chat. The situation doesn't change, it's precisely the same.
I don't want to separate the community, and if it's happen, the problem is not from me (._.) This is the problem in a country with more than one official language ^^
I can't speak perfectly in English, and NOBODY will stop me from speaking in French, I prefer inform you all.

What I apparently didn't make clear is that I think it is fine to speak your own language in private areas, but to make a semi-official alternate public channel is likely to divide the community even further, a division we really don't need at this point. I do understand that it is hard for many of you to speak English. I am really impressed that you all do as well as you do, knowing how hard it would be for me in any other language. I just think it is important to use a more universal language than French, not just for primary English speakers like me, but also for the speakers of Dutch, Hungarian, Romanian, Spanish, and whatever other languages are the native tongues of our active community.
