you'll create division.

The same has happened on #eUK. It used to be a super active channel. But then they started making extra smaller chans and now it's not used anymore.

If you don't speak english, #eBrussels is a great way of learning it and rather than choosing the easy way out, try to improve it by hanging out there even more.

No matter what you do and where you work, you will always need English as some point in your life, so you might as well learn it here.

correct indeed.
And on top of this you can teach others your language as well, it can work in both directions.

Hope you do not stop, that makes all of us so unique, we just must know when we can use our language and when we must adapt, that is all, in RL it is the same, I am Flemish, speaks almost 24/24 French, but change when needed to English, Dutch or German, think non of them are perfect when I use them, but they understand me, and that is enough for me

When I said "understand", I meant the language level is too high for me ^^ It is too difficult to understand the things you wanted to say, MaryamQ ^^

Boer Jan, maybe your language level allow you to do that, but not mine. I can speak perfectly Spanish and French, but me English level doesn't allow me to adapt me as I want :/

WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING? Pieter agrees with Shadowukcs? How the hell... Take a picture all! Copy this post! This is so believable ^^

The channel #eBruxelles is created and I contacted all French speakers.

Critically, I think it is necessary to understand all the things said in #eBrussels to improve the English level? It's not my case ^^

If I manage to be President (or Vice-President), I would make a law who forces people to translate all new laws in English, French and Flemish. In eBelgium, I think this is perfectly normal.
As the current Minister of Immigration, I'm obliged to ask MCKitKat or Jofroi to understand those texts, something not normal.

Simple reason. Both live in Japan, where they're a day ahead of us...

Although I respect the spirit of the idea, I'm afraid that in the long run the work might outrun the benefits. But if people are found who're up to the job, I'm cool with it, ofc.

Shad is right here (but that was easy, actually: no way to be proud of Razz )
Only a Grandeur-addict (a standard RL French citizen) could have come up with such an idea and also took it seriously.
eBelgium is a little community, much smaller than UK, and probably also more divided than UK in many different ways. Do you really want to put another (linguistic) divide among eBelgians?
People will only use their linguistic channel, and #ebrussels will die.
If you want an IRC channel for French-speaking eRepublik players, there is already one, so no need to create another: #eFrance

Cliffie, I don't know why you say that ._. I don't want a "IRC channel for French-speaking eRepublik players", I want a IRC channel for French speaking eBelgian players, #eFrance is for eFrance. If you look very closely, you can see "France" in #eFrance Very Happy

I know there was a Belgian channel for french-speaking people, but i don't remember what it was(if it still exist) and the fact that it became unused(and/or unknown) indicates to me that such a separate thing is not so successful on the long run.

btw: have you chosen a name for the channel? If you are still going thru with it.

The channel shouldn't be English only, especially since the official language of Belgium is a French/German mix. If anything, it should be English that is banned.

Turn off the restrictions and lets use the channel. It's a deadbeat most of the time.

I perfectly agree with Viridi.

Then Tommot, the channel is #eBruxelles , Bruxelles is the name of Brussels in French. I already told French speakers to go in

me and pieter actually agree on a lot of things (how a biochemical virus should be released on Anderlecht, politics, how this forum is filled with whiners, ...) the only thing we can't agree on is whether he should make me admin or not. I blame the group pressure getting to him and he chickening out. It's ok. I know he means well, he just isn't as strong of heart as I am.

En Belgique, la séparation linguistique des canaux de communication (presse à l'époque) à conduit à la création de deux communautés qui n'ont plus énormément en commun. Le but est de faire de même sur IRC et en eBelgique ?

1 moment... translating......
In Belgium, the separation of linguistic communication channels (press time) has led to the creation of two communities that do not have much in common. The goal is to do the same on IRC and eBelgique?
AH, yes it is strange that we are emulating RL inside a game that is very different from that. Very Happy

You all seem surprised that that zangetsu wants to set up a channel for French speakers. Well, that's what you get when you restrict what people can say in French. I don't speak French at all, but it doesn't annoy me when people are having a conversation in that language on the irc.

You're complaining that setting up a new channel will create division, yet you've asked for this by discouraging the use of French. Most of these rules seem to be created by people who aren't even Belgian in real life, and that's not fair.

Let people talk however they want and it won't be a problem. Until then, I support the creation of a French channel if that's what is wanted by the French speakers.

Actually, Viridi, if I am not mistaken, that rule is created and enforced by Pieter, who IS RL Belgian. I also don't care. I can't participate, but I can follow a French conversation if I care to. I can follow some in Dutch as well. Wink And I'm not above throwing in a little chitchat in Spanish, just to be a brat.

The point of the rule, as I understand it, is to keep people from feeling by conversations in languages they don't speak or read. I understand that most of you are not primary English speakers. I respect that you do as well as you do. If all Belgians were French speakers, or Dutch speakers, I would have no problem having that language as the official language of the channel, but you are actually excluding people who are RL Belgians if you use only one language or the other in a public channel.

exactly and since I refuse to speak french and you can't speak dutch, how the f*ck are we going to communicate with each other?

This game is made in English, therefore if you don't speak english, what the hell are you even doing playing erep in the first place.

Which is why I think English is the fair and decent middleground in which we can all communicate without looking like a gigantic asshole.

WOW, stay calm ^^
I think English (or other language) are necesary when you have to speak to a person who doesn't understand the language you're speaking, I didn't say something against that.
I just say that it is not normal to be punished when, for example, you speak in Flamish to an other Flemish speaker... it's as if you were speaking in private...

I am calm. You'll notice that I tend to use the f-word a lot in my posts. Smile

The #eBrussels chan is not a private channel. It's a public channel. And it can be perceived as rude when you and someone else are talking one language and the others can't follow the discussion. Why not speak in a private chan then? I fail to see why you need to divide the IRC community of a already small nation just for the sake of saying a few words in french when you might as well use a private querry.

Everyone here can speak english, otherwise you wouldn't have joined the game. So I fail to see why you can't just say things in English and if you don't know a word, people are always there to correct you. It only serves to improve you linguistic skills.

It's all about manners Zang, I speak English to all Flemish speaking people because I know other people are in the chan and would like to follow the conversation. Here in RL I'm surrounded with Germans and they all speak their language to each other, result is that me and others are completely excluded and that we don't talk nor have fun together but in seperate groups, and in longer term when there are different groups tensions start to arise between them. Same story for RL Belgium and eUK. Doesn't mean I want to exclude ny of my languages, but I just keep it for private chatting.

A private one is fine, just don't expect us to declare it an official one, #eBrussels stays the one everybody should be on.

Wink I don't think you'll find many Arabic speakers here - but I can tell you that I have been in gatherings where I was known to be American and not an Urdu speaker, and people chattered away in Urdu anyway (and this was in the states, btw). I did not find it a fun experience. Basically, it does, as said, come down to a matter of simple courtesy. If you speak in a public channel, you speak in a language that can be understood by all, or you take it into query. As I said, I personally don't have a problem with people speaking in French, but even other RL Belgians may have. If you want to go to a private channel that is clearly designated as private and not the official public channel, go for it. But please understand why others of us are concerned about division by language. Wink Some of us may think you're hiding something.

French: La parole nous a été donnée pour déguiser notre pensée.
English: We were given speech to hide our thoughts.
