Explosions at Boston Marathon
I know some of you have heard this news and reacted to it, and I surely know many of you live in areas where such attacks are more frequent and often more severe, but this is weighing heavily on my heart at present. I have previously been a spectator at this event, as have other members of my family, and I have several long-distance runners among my family members, as well, so it could easily have been one of us there. There is an 18-year-old college student from my state among the wounded (leg fracture and shrapnel wounds). I really cannot understand how people can justify this kind of action against other human beings. The link is a news feed from the nearest news channel for those who are interested. Major events like this one are top news over here as well. I've also had a very difficult time understanding this kind of action when I read it this morning. We're vulnerable beings, especially those of us who have the comfort of living a peaceful life.
That people allow it in their minds to exploit this kind of weakness to get a point across raises questions about the justice in this world and how it should wake responsible people up to find solutions that go beyond purely local or individual interests.

I don't want to sound like an asshole or inconsiderate but why is this news?
These things happen all over the world all the time, why when it happends in USA it's suddenly big news?

Good point, Fhaemita.
It just makes me sad and confused that these things are still used.
When will we learn...

While I agree with your view over the press' subjectivity, I think you're in the wrong house. MaryamQ posted because it happened near her place and threatened people she knew and loved. It had much more influence on her than the daily count of deaths you see every evening on television.

i think it's normal, in real belgium's news we always take care about problem in the real life and sad things.
I don't see why it's inappropriate in general discussions.

Re: Explosions at Boston Marathon
I think you are misunderstanding my point. I already pointed out that I know it happens more frequently and worse in other places, but as Nohjis said, this is close to home for me. I do not understand anyone anywhere who does things like this. Those of you who were here at the time of the shootings in Luik/Liege know I was also shocked by that episode. I wrote a poem about that, particularly about the death of Gabriel Leblonk. I have written about attacks in Palestine, in India and other places. This is no more nor less acceptable because it happens in one part of the world or another. I have previously lost a friend who thought I wasn't sufficiently traumatized by 9/11 and I was unwilling to support further pointless violence in Afghanistan (and later Iraq) with that as an excuse. But I am indeed sad about this particular incident, and thanks for those of you who understand and are sympathetic.
Edit: Just a side note for those who are upset by American centered media (and I agree with you), this is the oldest annual marathon in the world, and had participants from dozens of countries, as seen here, so this is a truly international event.

In this particular case it happened during an international sports event which would've been covered regardless of the attack itself meaning there was press present at the time of the act. Next to that people are less shocked when things happen where they can't get hurt personally. An event like this reminds everyone that it can happen anywhere and I hope that it also reminds people that it's not a problem you can just deal with locally, be it an attack in Baghdad or one in Utoya or Boston.
