Have been leaning towards Obama, but I don't really know anymore.

Honestly, republican and democrat are so similar it doesn't even make any difference.

Anyway, was watching a speech by Romney, of course he promises all this great stuff, and he's actually quite funny, though it's probably words with no actions, like most stuff.

What do you guys think?

I think no politician in the polarized American system can stay true to his own true ideals. However, I still consider Obama the better choice. Romney has turned against his own previous policies in order to pander to the GOP leadership, and I am totally not impressed.

Romney is a fool. He's a flip-flopper and will do anything to gain votes.

He was in the UK for less than 3 days and you could tell he wasn't up for it.

being a less worse candidate than romney isn't something special or something to be proud of, the averaged chimp would be less worse than romney ....

Here's why I picked Romney

We know Obama is a fcktard. His sole accomplishment is Obamacare and even that he managed to screw up.

Romney can be anything, he can be better or equally shït. I'd prefer my odds with him then. Besides, it's not like either one of them matters. In the end it's the same ppl in power, with just a different face to represent their idea's.

Also: a shïttyer dollar is better for the EU export and the Euro zone.

With the tools he got in the house and senate, it was hard to even have the Affordable Healthcare bill. While the Dems control both the house and senate, the GOP filibuster of the senate made a more progressive healthcare bill impossible. To close the filibuster, you need at least 60 senators and that is why Obama and the Dems need to mellow a lot of the details of his bill to get moderate GOP senators to vote for it.

Overall I do not think it was a mess up. While I wanted to see it go more, a lot of the changes now is overall better like preventing rejecting kids with preexisting conditions and making women's check ups like mammograms and pep smears no cost to the patient as long as she as insurance. While it is not perfect, I think it is progress nevertheless.

Note that Republicans have the most power in senate atm, and they do everything to hold these things

Not the Senate but the House. The Senate is controlled by the Dems but due to the lack of Germaineness rules in the senate, there is a need of 60 votes to end a filibuster making 60 the magic number, not 50. (Senate have 100 members)

But I think Obama did a lot on his term.

-Affordable Health Care Act
-Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell
-Auto bail out
-Killing bin Laden
-Passed the Stimulus
-Passed Wall Street reform (albeit not really fix a lot)
-Ended the Iraq War and scaling down the Afghan war
-Passed Wall Street Reform
-Helped ended Gaddafi's regime
-Kicked banks out of federal student loan program and expanded Pell Grant spending
-Passed credit card reforms
-Achieved New START Treaty with Russia
-Gave the FDA Power to regulate tobacco
-Expanded hate crimes protections
- Helped South Sudan declare independence

and I am sure there are many more.

-Affordable Health Care Act - granted he did push it trough but I barely call it a good healthcare bill.

-Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell - good thing I'll admit that.

-Auto bail out - meh

-Killing bin Laden - would have happened with our without him. Besides that it's nothing more than a moral victory. All you did was end the suffering of an old man and create a diplomatic incident in the process.

-Passed the Stimulus - would have happened under any president. Something had to be done. And that stimulus might end up bankrupting you.

-Passed Wall Street reform - (albeit not really fix a lot) - like you said: did little.

-Ended the Iraq War and scaling down the Afghan war - Look how Iraq ended. On the first day after the US troops left, half the opposition was arrested. It was never ready to be left and you repeated the mistakes you made in Vietnam. As for Afghanistan: that "scaling" down basically means: "we're giving up on the countryside and only protect the cities". You handed over the countryside to the Taliban who regained control over the majority of the country. By scaling down he created Island of US controlled towns surrounded by Taliban, exposing thousands of people to taliban cruelty.

-Passed Wall Street Reform - Like that will make a difference.

-Helped ended Gaddafi's regime - you provided the supplies for it. Rebels where the ones acting as meat shields. Not to mention the US was initially even helping Ghaddafi to suppress the uproar because he was an important strategical ally. It was only after the EU and the public opinion wanted a intervention that they came into action. Which was still very much too late.

-Kicked banks out of federal student loan program and expanded Pell Grant spending - Don't really know much about that.

-Passed credit card reforms - Don't really know much about that either but it doesn't seem such a big deal.

-Achieved New START Treaty with Russia - Haha, the US was much more eager for this than Russia. Russia has plenty of partners in the world. And it's growing a much better pace the the US is doing at the moment. (on economy but also on all other fields). Trust me, the US needed to do this for their own benefit. Any president would have gotten this.

-Gave the FDA Power to regulate tobacco - about damn time.

-Expanded hate crimes protections - Is that really something he did or something congress did?

- Helped South Sudan declare independence - would have happened one way or another.

shadow, although I agree with your assessments of many of these achievements, there are some things that need to be remembered here. No president, I don't care who, can do anything without the cooperation of Congress, and as long as Congress is so heavily partisan and polarized, nothing of note can be achieved except things that clearly can only go one way. The "affordable health care" that was passed, while I agree it did not go nearly far enough, still has many people calling for its repeal because they don't want any national health care at all. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, passed a very similar program in Massachusets, and now is opposed to that type of program. This, imo, does indeed make Obama the lsser of two evils.

The Belgian system is so far away from the American one (or the French one, we also have a very binary system), perhaps it's difficult to grab the whole concept of just trying to crush the other side and not making any compromises. Wink

MaryamQ, I find the whole "booohoooo he was being blocked by congress his entire term"-argument a bit silly. Clinton had to work with a Republican congress as well and he turned out, apart from a few f***-ups, (all pun intended) as a great president.

Thing about this (and the last several US presidential elections) is because of the electoral college and the trend of many states to follow party line, is that the majority of votes don't really matter. Romney isn't going to do much more than fund-raise in california (for example), as he has very little chance of winning that state. So presidential votes in california don't really matter.

A voter has to be registered, in a "battleground" state, and actually vote.

So my vote (being in a battleground state) actually matters, and that's why I'm constantly bombarded by political advertising. Seriously, like -every- commercial on TV.

So feel free to ignore popular polls and surveys, unless they are from the 10 or so critical states.
