And they also get money for the links at the footer. Or if they have to little advertisers they use it to get higher in google.
Actually that is black hat SEO (as some links change when you refresh or at least the link title changes) and is forbidden by google but a lot of forums do it... As long as it isn't reported (and even if reported most of the time) it doesn't give a penalty.

Before the financial crisis I got $100 a month for random links like that.

I don't see any ads at all, try putting it on a known Belgian website. Might cost a bit but you will get a babyboom!
