"Vote" message system

Since few weeks/days, people have adopted the habit of quoting others messages without adding anything, no added value.

The meaning of these posts is : i agree with that, i have nothing more to add, i support that. It's the same as +1 finally.

But my question is : why does people wanted to delete the "vote" message system if it's to continue "voting" message by an other way (here : quoting msg without adding anything).

To see more and more post with no added value is maybe not very constructive to debate and make them longer, and at the end, the "vote" system was maybe not that bad no ?

I am always tempted to delete posts that don't add anything, but that might enrage some users. :p

I vote for restoring the message voting system, since it indeed removed clutter from the debates

no, don't restore it. Ppl abused it all the time.


Several ppl (including myself, I'll freely admit that) where for the lulz just downvoting the posts of 1 person for the sake of giving them a bad reputation.

That's why it was abolished. It was a stupid system, had no purpose and was more abused than used.

I can tell you now the names of at least 3 ppl who's post will be downgraded so often, all the time that they'll end up with -200 in no time.

all it does is piss ppl off

It will become a down vote war again.

and if we can disable the '-' vote?

2 choices here:

- Restore the vote-function again
- Stop quoting if you have nothing different to add to the discussion

The difference is that that green bar does not tell you who supports that post. When people post +1 and that crap, we at least know that they support that person's opinion and what not. It actually does add to a thread in that you can know how many people are on one side and how many are on the other in terms of opinions.

yea i agree, an +1 mostly tells us that somebody made a good post and that u fully agree with his/her words.
sure when the only thing ur doing is giving +1 then its annoying.
However the +1 is only valued by the guy who gave the +1 and how this guy is seen by the community.
For example, individual A always says +1 in debates and never really speaks up.
Then the rest knows that this person agrees with the post, however they dont value their +1 because he always agrees with somebody and never says something himself.
However if for example individual B gives an +1 and this person normally is very active in debates and almost never give +1, then the rest will know that this person saw the words of somebody else and didnt have something to add.

as i said, the +1 only gives value if u value the person who gives it.

besides, the minus will result in huge reputation losses and even more slandering (i know back in the days i got -5 every day, just because people didnt like me as dutch guy).
with only + its kinda useless, because u either vote up ur own posts or u become friends with somebody and vote up each other posts.
In the end either everybody has a green bar or nobody (because nobody cares about that bar and just continues quoting).

so best is to just keep the quoting and maybe just send somebody an pm or talk to him on irc when he/she gives alot of quotes with +1

Also, last time ppl didn't get downvoted because their comment and good content or not, last time they were downvoted based on how much they where disliked.

Even with only "+"-votes you'll get the exact same result: ppl +-voting the ppl they like and not because they made a good point

The reputation bar is nothing but a popularity contest and you made a mistake bringing it back.

EDIT: You must also remember that some people have lives to attend to (not me ofc) and they don't have the time to make a well written post on why they agree the admins should be replaced.

The bar won't make the +1 posts and the just quoting posts disappear. I'd rather have people debate ( with manners and respect for the others )!

Just like the +1 and the posts that contain nothing but a quote, I don't feel they add anything at all to the discussion.
