Re: Privacy on the internet
ofc not
I was having a discussion on how some ppl are foolishly going around with their personal information on the net. He argued that, so I told him I could find him in less than 5 minutes. He didn't believed me so I showed him how easy it is to track him down. With just a 5 minute search and barely any effort, I had his name, photo and everything. Personally, that worries me.
If you had followed the discussion than you would have known that I was warning him (and not only NLSP, there are others here as well) to be a little more cautious with their personal information on the internet, rather than looking them up for the kick (though admittedly, his reaction when I said "hi [name], how's life in [village]?" was p laughable). If someone can find so much personal information about you, with just google, you should be worried. Very worried. You would be surprised of the large amount of major companies who actually hire ppl to do these kinds of background searches on new recruits. I spoke a major investor earlier who leads some major top-50 companies in Belgium and around the globe. And that guy openly said to me "when we have recruits for top positions, we have ppl who go trough their facebook profiles and who do full background searches on these people just to get an idea on what kind of person that. Often I base my first impression on those reports".
When you spend enough time on Anon boards and /b/, you learn that there are some p sick ppl out there and that identity theft more of a common practice than you'd think. Even burglars use the internet nowadays to scout when ppl are home and when not. When I see people like Jofroi making goodledocs for erep purposes under the name "JofroiNeuwels", I'm quite frankly shocked by his nativity. I have a IRL friend in burglary who tells me that such "internetscouting" is becoming more and more frequent.
You won't find any picture of me on the internet. And anyone with half a brain and a common sense of privacy should know how dangerous having so much info laying around is.
So did I google him? yes. But only after he told me I could find him and only to make a point: protect your information better, because sooner or later someone will make advantage of it

Re: Privacy on the internet
related: was on some Anon chan a few months ago (during their DDOS attacks for operation payback (after corporate companies DDOS'd thepiratebay)) and they found the adress and location of a CEO of a major security firm who was responsible for the attacks on TPB. They literally kept calling his house for months, they send pizza/flower orders (often for 50 pizza) daily to his house, ...
That's the kind of s*** that can happen when you don't watch out with your private information on the net.

To clarify, I wasn't criticizing shadow, but NLSP's apparent oblivious response to what was obviously a hyperbole statement.

none of those actually show my face
@helviro: you're right. privacy is an illusion. But to some extend you can regulate it. Even if you type in my full name, you won't find anything linked to me. The most you can find about me is my first name and my city (which I don't try to hide and most ppl here know.) but other than that, gl trying to find anything else.

Re: Privacy on the internet
While shadow's point is correct that many people have a lot of information available on the internet (more then they want or realise), my comment was not made with that in mind.
Many people know things about other people's real life here and untill a certain degree, I don't mind.
However, I have the opinion you should be able to seperate that real life and eRepublik life of others.
Does it really matters what a person does irl, from what city he is, what footballclub he likes, in order of his performance on eRepublik?

related: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=how-googles-new-privacy-p
to all the suckers who use their real name for their google/gmail account (yes I'm talking about you, pieter, nlsp, critically, xironn, jofroi, sammy, .... ), give it a few years and you'll have no privacy whatsoever left. And then it's only a matter of time before they are going to pass your information (your googlesearches, your mails, your youtube channel, your gdoc's, your GPS location, your google earth searches, your calendar with appointments/birthday's, your RL name, passwords, your adress, your telephone number, ...) to Advertisement companies, the government and eventually Tax services.
Be afraid... be very f*** afraid. I know I am jizzing my pants when I read s*** like that.
for those who don't know: there's a war going on between google and facebook. The stakes? Trying to get as much personal information about you as possible. And that worries, frightens and pisses me off.

How do you delete ur facebook account?
Re: Privacy on the internet
Pertazeta wrote:

that's the best part: you can't.
Well you can send them an email requesting that your account is deleted, but under the motto "you never know if you want to come back on your decision", they will never delete it. Just get it offline. They will keep all your data.
Some other good things to know about FB: all the things that come on your FB (your shouts, your mails, your conversations, your pictures,...) remain stored on the Facebook servers, even after you have deleted them in your profile.
Also, all the pictures you post on FB become copy-right of facebook. So technically, they can use your pictures and sell them to companies. Just imagine opening opening a magazine and seeing an advertisement with your picture and the text "I did unsafe sex and now I got aids and herpes - Don't be like me, buy Durex". Good luck trying to get laid ever again then.
This may sound funny, but legally it's perfectly possible.

Re: Privacy on the internet
the internet already has my personal information regarding RL name, email adres and phone number.
why?
I am atm a youth trainer in my local rugby club, whcih means I need to be contacted if needed by parents for questions regarding trainings, matches, insurances etc.
I am member of a praesidium of a students club, which means I am a representant of this club and that young students need to be able to find me to know about us
aka I am a public figure. People need to be able to contact me.
so, yeah, you'll find me by googling my ingame nick probably. don't mix me up though with the manager with the same name :p
it that an sich a problem?
not really
I do not need an anonymous life on the internet. I'm not a hacker or so. If people wishes to seek information about me, ok. If my future boss wants to know my personal info and does not accept me because I have been to parties and have been drunk during my college years, then I would wonder wether I'd even like to work in an office with such climate.
btw, shadow, regarding pictures and facebook: if someone shows a picture of you in a magazine or so for which you have not given permission, then they have to remove it if you file in a complaint. Does not matter that facebook has the copyright on the pictures, it would be the same if someone makes a picture of you on the street and uses it afterwards. So you can get that removed.
