Re: To merge or not to merge?
a merge with eNL ??? Why ?
With arrogant and hardcore nationalists people. It can't work. They believe in their babyboom, created a "homogenic community" with only Dutch citizens who speak only Dutch.
A merge with them will be like last year, if Belgians want to be considered like s***, it is a good option but I am sure that Belgians deserve better than that.
As long that people like Trinc, Garmr (aka the alcohol sponge), Mitch Crapp, ... will continue to play at erepublik, the situation will not change.
They are in the s*** because they lost money every day because they made bad economical choices. They are sure that their choices is the best, ... That's their s***.
Now if they want a merge because in they are in the s*** : Let's keep them in the s***

Unless Belgium takes over NL, then I'm dead against it.

Re: To merge or not to merge?
Care to share some background info?
Where did they restart the debate? What's the message they sent?
Anyway, if we're going to discuss merging; we might first ask the question: Do we want to merge? The next question is then: with whom do we want to merge? I think UK offers more possibilities than NL, to be honest (plus, they speak English )...
@ Kravenn: Agreed with your first paragraph (about their "Dutch" babyboom), but the eNL economy is doing quite good. Additionally, during the merge, Belgians owned the Dutch. They just didn't admit it, but the numbers of BP members and the amount of mandates Thomas did as CP tell the truth...

Re: To merge or not to merge?
currently, I see no advantage for us in joining the eNL, next to a bigger community.
also, joining one of our neighbours will bring us into the PHOENIX camp. Do we want this?

You can also join Ireland in an alliance :p
Ireland will walk swiftly through the UK to get to Belgium and unite :p

And yes, I still am in Umbrella. Too loyal to leave Leviathin all alone by himself.

Re: To merge or not to merge?
I understand that some Belgians are attached to their country and want to stay neutral.
A Merge is not easy to make because it has some risks
- a month without congress and at the first region who is back on the map : it is "free citizenship or everybody"
- Alliance, you are neutral, all of your neighbor are in Phx, if you want to merge with one of them, you will be in Phx
- The gov must "buy" currencies to make the change. Because, you are unable to do something with BEF in UK, Fr, NL or germany, ...
But one thing can you still do is :
- try to have a "economical" cooperation with another countries. You are neutral, so the risk to be under a embargo is not huge (except from Poland who make a embargo against every country except Eden and Brolliance ones). The countries that you choose to make an economical cooperation and can help you in some sectors like weapons, ... and you can help in exporting food, MT, ...
The good thing to people who are attached to the neutrality is that, you don't take huge risks to be invaded, ...

Re: To merge or not to merge?
I think Ireland is prepared to have an economical cooperation
Belgium should specialise in a certain kind of product; maybe hospitals or defence systems
Belgium is neutral so they sell their hospitals and defence systems to the highest bidder, ofcourse the big countries have their own hospital companies, but other dont, problem for Belgium is to create a Q5 hospital/defence system
Belgium has to specialise in something (not food, see below) they can export and where there is lack of in the e-world
Why not food? Hapiness is going to be removed, so all welness food will double to triple in all markets, prices of food will drop enormous I think except if the admins find back their brain and or keep hapiness or replace it by something else

Innos28 wrote:problem for Belgium is to create a Q5 hospital/defence system

To gather enough money to start such a company without using all of the countries money
Also I just thought this up:
Start weapon companies, in Belgium they wont get sold cause there is no war, but when a country is low on guns Belgium starts selling them overthere, ofcourse this a lot difficulter because of import taxes etc (black market?)
Anyway, Belgium needs something to export and to bring money into the country
I started up my company btw, or better I bought one
EDIT: Ireland is gonna specialise in food, so thats problematic as Belgiums industry is concentrated on food
