When a new citizen is created its Land will have the Job market, Training grounds, Storage, Town center, three grain farms, Q1 food company and 3 Free Lands.

Note: Job Market, Storage and Training Grounds are included in Number of Lands occupied, linking the Land from Profile page.

Does anyone know if you upgrade your "free" Q1 food factory if you can then sell it on the market? Or even dissolve it?

I doubt. It'd generate automatically a new Q1 food I think.

to upgrade the food factory is 20/70/170/370 gold for q2/3/4/5 respectively.

my thought with upgrading and then selling the q1 "free" factory is that as a q1 free building, you can't disolve or sell it. If it was q2, even though it would cost me 20 gold, I'd maybe get 27ish gold when i sold it plus the vacant land. even selling it for 21 gold (via a kickback) would be profitable.

Dunno how to find out what happens when you upgrade it, and I don't really want a q2 food factory in case it cant be sold (seeing as I just bought one from Jof).
